FAQs about the Chinese
American Museum Volunteer Docent Program
What is It? Every year, hundreds
of visitors come to the Museum to learn about its exhibits,
education programs, and art. The program prepares volunteers
to discuss Chinese American history and contemporary issues
with school children, college students, and adult groups. Volunteer
docents lead groups of approximately 10 people through the Museum
and engage them as they learn about the historic building, the
development of the Chinese American community in Los Angeles,
and art created by members of the community.
Who Can Volunteer? Any person
age 16 and over can volunteer. Most of our tours are with school
aged children and take place during the weekdays from the hours
of 10:00 am-12:00 pm year round. If you enjoy interacting with
students, or have time to spare during the weekdays, this job
is for you! Docents commit to two tours per month for one year.
How Do We Get Trained? The
training program is a comprehensive course that takes place
at the Museum. Docent trainees learn about the Museum as a historic
site and practice public speaking, touring methods, and of course,
Chinese American history. The course includes speakers, presentations,
and a binder containing learning materials and information.
Docent trainees are well prepared to present information to
visitors.
