GETTY MARROW UNDERGRADUATE SUMMER INTERNSHIP

at the Chinese American Museum

The Chinese American Museum (CAM) is proud to offer one paid, full-time summer/fall internship for a qualified undergraduate student from July 2020 to November 2020.

Duration: Mid–July, 2020 – November 2020

Hours per week: Summer Break: 40 hours a week, Full-Time

Fall Season (during the Academic School Year): approximately 15 hours a week, part-time. Flexibility will account for academic schedule.

Stipend: $6,000 for a ten-week period

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates considering a career in museums are strongly encouraged to apply, but candidates from all areas of undergraduate study are welcome. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, research skills, and computer literacy are strongly desired.

Internships are intended for members of groups underrepresented in professions related to museums and the visual arts, including, but not limited to, individuals of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, and Pacific Islander descent.

Per the eligibility requirements of the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship (MUI) Summer Program, applicants must:

• Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program. Students must have completed at least one semester or two quarters of college by June 2020 and

• Reside or attend college in Los Angeles County.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Public Programs and Digital Engagement Intern will work closely with the Public Programs Manager and Registrar/Collections Associate to assist with projects related to community engagement and digital audiences. The scope of work will focus on the following goals:

1. Research and explore the museum’s current audience; explore new method of engagement to current and new participants in-person and digitally. Emphasis will be on the museum’s annual event commemorating of the Los Angeles Chinese Massacre of 1871. (80%)
2. Support the Collections Department in digitizing photographs/artifacts; Assist with creating digital campaigns and/or learning resources using the museum’s collection. (20%)

During the duration of the internship, the intern will learn how to conduct audience outreach and will utilize this research to brainstorm and develop functions including, but not limited to, special events, public programming, digital initiatives and education activities. The intern will also learn to digitize and record museum collections pieces and be introduced to collections management. He/she/they will gain an understanding of event planning, human experience design, museum evaluation tools such as conducting surveys, and Chinese American history.

Applicants with experience in digital content production, social media, event planning, or with an interest in community development and/or informal learning are strongly encouraged to apply.

If remote work is required during the duration of the internship, the Public Programs and Digital Engagement Intern will be expected to have the ability to work at home with stable internet, have access to a working laptop or computer, and ability to install remote working software such as MS Teams.

Programs & Education Internship:

The Chinese American Museum offers unpaid part-time Programs & Education internships year-around. Interns must commit to 2-3 months in conjunction with their academic calendar and 10-15 hours per week. The intern assists with educational initiatives and public programming (general and exhibition-related) and is assigned independent project(s) under the supervision of a department staff member. Duties will include assisting with developing and implementing public programs, leading tours and workshops, and conducting research. The position will require some evenings and weekends for public programs. The assigned internship project(s) varies and depends on availability, the needs of the department, and the intern’s skills and interests. Candidates must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate institution.
